I accept commissions for repair of stringed instruments, whether of small or great value.
I do work on both acoustic and electric guitars.
I will also make individual stringed instruments upon request.
Student instruments:
I restore and often completely rebuild old stringed instruments. In this way, I find it possible to achieve good sound quality in violins and cellos at relatively low cost.
For talented children and their parents, I have devised two possible methods of handling the question of the ever-changing instrument size. In my workshop I keep a supply of used violins and cellos that I have restored including sound posts, ebony fingerboards, good strings and bow, and an appropriate case. These instruments are available to rent as well as for sale. Installment payments can be negotiated.
If you purchase an instrument from me, as your child grows the small beginner's instrument can be exchanged for larger sizes, naturally with value reconciliation.
With respect to strings, the price is not as scary as we may think. It is my opinion that the proper length of the string is of the utmost importance. A 1/4 size violin will sound better with a 1/4 size string,
than if it is strung with even the most expensive one (say "Dominant") of 4/4 size.
